I am struck today by the importance of family. A woman I know has a daughter who just had a baby, unfortunately this joyous event has been clouded by pain and hurt. Because of strained relationships, the daughter did not let my friend have anything to do with the pregnancy or the birth and refused to let her even come to the hospital to see the baby.
Such a situation is so foreign to me. I cannot imagine a circumstance where I would be willing to cut my family out of my life. I am lucky to have a very strong relationship with my parents and my family and I would not trade that for anything. My family is my nucleus, it is where my identity comes from and I could not imagine a life that did not include them.
I pray that my friend and her daughter can find a way to heal the rift that is between them and that her daughter will realize how important her mother will be in helping her as a new mother. I also pray that these two women will understand how important families are and that you cannot replace them.
